As many of you probably don't know, the FIFA Club World Cup is currently being contested, as it is anually, in Japan. For those of that don't know, the CWC is an internation cup comprising of each continental champion and the winner of the Japanese first division (as hosts).
In the preliminary round, the Japanese team (Kashiwa Reysol, JAP) plays off in a single leg match against the Oceanian champion (Auckland City, NZ). The winner goes through to the quarter finals where the North American (Monterrey, MEX), Asian (Al-Sadd, QAT) and African (Espérance, TUN) winners are entered. The winners then move into the semi-finals, where finally the European (Barcelona, ESP) and South American (Santos, BRA) are added, with the winners advancing to the final.
So far, Kashiwa Reysol beat Auckland city 2-0 to reach the quarter finals thanks to two goals from Tanaka and Kudo just before half time, where they met Monterrey of Mexico. This match ended as a 1-1 draw, with the Japanese side winning 4-3 on penalties. In the other quarter final, Espérance suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Qatari side Al-Sadd.
This leaves the semi final line up as:
Kashiwa Reysol vs Santos
Al-Sadd vs Barcelona
The first of the semi finals is due to be played today at the Toyota stadium, with the 5th place playoff also being held at the same stadium. I'll update the scores in a new post when they come in.
