Ligue 1 - TRANSFER NEWS

Uhm. I uh... I've never bothered to look at transfers before. Well, I do know one thing.

DAVID BECKHAM IS MOVING TO PARIS SG.

Yes, in a startling move, David Beckham, the once hero of Great Britain, is moving to France.

Off the top of my head I couldn't tell you how much he was bought for, but I can tell you that he's being paid like £700,000 a ... week? Wait, was it a week? Yeah, it was. Was it? Yes, definitely a week.

So, Davey B, you're getting £700,000 a week to put up with the French? They're paying you to play football, not to work, so you won't need to worry about being the only person in France who appears to have a job. Don't worry, Beckster, they do all have jobs, and they are all paid handsomely.

Oh, but you will have to watch out for the constant bombardment of anti-depressants in the officially most depressed (in terms of people, not ecological deformation) country on the planet.

Oops.

You know how Beckham moving to PSG is quite literally the biggest piece of transfer news going right now? Hah, you'll never guess what. He's extending his stay at LA Galaxy to help spread the name of football in America and to keep his family happy.

So uh... this is awkward...

DAVID BECKHAM IS NOT MOVING TO PARIS SG.

And... umm... that's the transfer news, I guess. No! I shall use the internet!

Okay. That failed. I searched for France football transfer news and Yahoo gave me their page, that in the URL looked to be correct, mainly because it uses the words "france" and "transfers" but it gave me news about freaking Premier League! Disgraceful!

Oh, Paris Saint-Germain has a new coach, Carlo Ancelotti. And as you may know, he used to be the boss of Chelsea. I think. Yeah, I'm correct. Who knows what this means for PSG? Maybe when the football starts again, PSG will win some games, because they might be on a loss/win/drawing streak right now. Or they're not on a streak.

God I should have learned more about football before doing this job.

Okay, this is fruitless. The only things that have happened in French football have been that Paris Saint-Germain sacked their old boss, got a new one, and have had a host of amazing players turn them down because they're too loyal to their current cities. Players like David Beckham and Didier Drogba. Drogba is sticking with Marseille. Does Drogba play for Marseille? Well, that's what the news told me. When did that happen? I swear he played in the Premier League... Never mind, all you need to know is that he also is not going to move to PSG.

Good.

So the official word on the transfer street is that literally nothing is happening. Good.

Ligue 1 - Guess What!

The French are taking a break! Hahahaha! That's so like them.

So you know how the French do four day weeks when they can actually be bothered to walk into their office as opposed to standing outside it with a plaque detailing their anger at their office being just a bit too far to walk to in the morning? Well, now they're off for the winter.

Go figure.

They'll be back (maybe) on the 14th of January.

So in that case, I get to make like French and take some time off.

Pete out.

A-League Review: Round 12

Melbourne Heart 3-2 Melbourne Victory

The game began very high-paced, and a fantastic through ball from Harry Kewell put through Archie Thompson on the wing, though the youngster's pull back resulted in some pinballing in the box.

A sold out crowd then saw another beautiful run from Thompson ended by a flying challenge from the Heart keeper to set up a penalty for Carlos Hernandez to hit tamely at the keeper, and the atmosphere became noticeably louder.

Then came a moment of pure beauty, Archie Thompson, who before today had never scored in a Melbourne derby, scored with a clever flick, before looping the ball over the keeper. In fact, I'm gonna link you to it here. In fact, have a highlights video, on the house.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf82_K351k8&feature=related

He then proceeded to mount the corner flag in celebration. Awesome. I think i might put these videos in from now on for the one 2 watch...

The attacking intent continued with a resurgent Victory side making light of their recent dip in form and showing no signs of dwelling on their penalty miss. Though Heart did create a chance that the keeper knew nothing about. (Looked like it hurt some aswell)

Heart then got their breakthrough. A lapse in concentration allowed...Matt Thompson...to get through and slot past the Victory keeper in a pulsating game with a lot of attacking from both sides. Honestly, this game is a joy to watch and th...2-1! What a goal! Heart just scored again, Thompson again! Chipped the keeper from the outside of the area after a great through ball. Suddenly the Heart are/were back in front.

Both teams began the second half brightly. Also, I'm only doing this long report because it's my One 2 Watch, don't expect it for every game ;).

Hearts' Clint Bolton made an insane save at point blank rage from...Sernak? Cernak? Whatever his name is, ah he just got subbed off, it's Cernak. Victory kept pressing, desparate for an equaliser.

Victory then had a bit of a scare, with a goalline clearance...also Heart just scored again, 3-1. Pretty good build up, slightly acrobatic finish aswell. What a game this is, if you're reading this report because you didn't catch the match, you missed out. Bicycle kick, good goal.

More attacks from Victory, but you can tell they're starting to get desparate. Being reduced to long range efforts, and none of them are coming anywere close. Harry Kewell continued his dry streak by blazing over from close range when he really should have buried it. Hernandez did score a fantastic free kick, but it was to no avail as Heart took all 3 points to take them second in the league. What a fantastic match.

Perth Glory 1-3 Central Coast Mariners

As soon as Josh Mitchell was sent off in the 26th minute, you could already tell it wasn't going to be Perth's night. The score remained 0-0 for the rest of the first half, but a 15 minute period in the second half saw th ree fairly decent goals from Ibini, Bojic and Simon. Ibini's goal was actually quite good, although if you read the play-by-play report on the A-League website..."Bernie Ibini-Isei Central Coast Mariners FC scores goal general middle left left foot inside 6m general attack". Poetic.

A shellshocked glory side could only muster a weak response, and their consolation effort came in the 83rd minute, but by then the points had been sealed. Central Coast are now sitting pretty 5-points clear at the top of the table, with their next match against Gold Coast being seen as an easy opportunity to extend this lead. For Glory, a trip to current off-form team Brisbane Roar awaits.

Wellington Pheonix 5-2 Newcastle Jets

Dani Sanchez was by far the best player in this game, bagging two goals in the first half as Wellington stormed to a well-deserved victory that leaves them 5th in the table, but within touching distance of 2nd. A finish from Greenacre and two more from Sanchez's replacement, Pavlovic, set Wellington on the way to continue their impressive form of late. For Newcastle it was a total reversal of their recent matches - they played terribly in the first half and picked up in the second. They're now sliding towards the bottom of the table, and if Gold Coast can carry on their little run, they could soon find themselves in trouble.

Gold Coast United 1-0 Brisbane Roar

Wow...but...they...how...who..eh? What? How on earth...36 matches unbeaten seems a long time ago now. Straight off the back of that, Brisbane have now lost 4 games on the trot. In all fairness, it was an 88th minute penalty that sealed the win for Gold Coast, and this win lifts them off the bottom of the table, and puts them in 9th place, and things for them are finally looking up. Ricky Visconte fouled Ben Halloran sillyly in the area with only 2 minutes left of normal time. Silly, silly. They are now unbeaten in three matches, and have gone 270 minutes of football without conceding, which is a club record.

Brisbane, meanwhile are in free fall. They are dropping points left, right and center, and are quite literally shipping goals from left, right and center. Yes, they are waiting on some important players to come back from injury, but this is no excuse. You'd think a side as strong as they were would have the depth to cope with an injury crisis - it would appear not - and they now face a stern test with Glory. It is not a good time to be a Roar fan.

A-League Preview: Round 12

Bloody typical, I missed the first one again.

Confirmed: Sydney FC 2-2 Adelaide United FC

10-man Adelaide United secured a valuable point against in-form Sydney to...yesterday, ensuring that John Kosmina's reign did not get off to a losing start. Also, Adelaide have a new manager...maybe should have done something about that during the week. Next time, I promise. Anyway, in what was a fairly interesting match which involved 4 goals, 2 penalties, 1 red card and 8 yellows, Adelaide definitely got a point they needed in this match.

For John Kosmina, this was a return to the Sydney stadium he left two and a half years ago, and it was a return to remember, as goals from Mullen and Vidosic ensured he got off to a fairly decent start to his Adelaide tenure, gaining the lead after only 8 minutes. To be fair to Sydney, they produced a fairly good performance themselves, but everyone will be talking about Adelaide's improvement. Unfortunately, I didn't manage to see this match, but I'll update as soon as I find out what happened.

Dukey's One 2 Watch: Melbourne Heart - Melbourne Victory

Date: Friday December 23
Kick-off: 8:00pm AEDT, 10.00pm NZDT
Venue: AAMI Park, Melbourne

The closest you'll get to a European style derby match, and there is no love lost between these two sides, let me tell you. They share a stadium รก la AC-Inter Milan and they have been playing each other at least 3 times a season for the last...year.

Thus far, the head to head records are inconclusive - 1 win each and 2 draws. However, these are two sides on very different veins of form. Victory are just (seemingly) coming out of a slump, they won their last game (which I was CERTAIN they would lose), and all credit to them, they played well. But Heart are on another level. Look at the form table:

Melbourne Heart: WLWWW
Melbourne Victory: DWLDW

As you can see, Heart are on a bit of a run, but in this league (Roar aside) you don't get runs. I'm going to go with a Victory win. Yeah, you heard me, Victory to win. I think the pressure to maintain the run will be too much for an inexperienced Heart side, and Victory's veterans will see them through. This match has so far been very exciting, so make sure you tune in.

Perth Glory - Central Coast Mariners

Date: Friday December 23
Kick-off: 7:00pm AWST, 10:00pm ADST
Venue: nib Stadium

This is one of the most one sided fixtures in the A-League. 19 played, 12 CCM wins, 2 PG wins and 5 draws. Central Coast are on the form of their lives, and with a win in this match, could go 6 points clear of Brisbane at the top of the table. Mustafa Amini and Bernie Ibini-Isei are both on fire at the moment, and it is extremely important that they keep up their impressive work rate. The last match here was a 2-1 victory to the Mariners, and since then they have become and even more powerful force. Looking at the form tables...

Perth Glory: DLWLL
Central Coast Mariners : WWWWW

Just gonna put it out there - Central Coast will win this. Not that I don't like to support the underdog - I'm British, of course I do - but I can't see Glory winning this, and I can't see Coast throwing away the chance to be so far ahead in the table. I do, however, think they will have to work for it, Perth will be no pushovers.

Wellington Pheonix - Newcastle Jets

Date: Friday, 23 December 2011
Kick-off: 5.300pm AEDT, 7.30pm local
Venue:Westpac Stadium

Wellington have won this fixture 9 times, including winning the last one 2-0, while Jets have won it a paltry 4 times. Pheonix are on a decent run (WLWWL) while Jets are on anything but (LDWLL). However, I think Jets might take this...or it'll be a draw...yeah...this match will be a draw. No, who am I kidding, Pheonix will have this one. Pheonix to win.

I saw the Jets last week, and they looked tired towards the end of their match with Sydney, and with Wheelman suspended, the best I can see them getting out of this match is a point. Wellington have won 3 of their last 2, whereas Jets have the opposite record. Wins for either team will elevate them up to the upper echelons of the league, but for the most part, this is a very mid-table match. No seasons are going to be made or broken here.

Gold Coast United - Brisbane Roar

Monday, 26 December 2011
Kick-off: 7.30pm AEDT, 6.30pm local
Venue: Skilled Park

This is an important match.

Both teams are desparate for a win. For Brisbane, the prize is keeping up pace with the now-leaders Central Coast, and preserving their dignity and avoiding going on a record breaking losing streak (and just after their lossless one aswell). For Gold Coast, it means the possibility of sneaking off the bottom spot and rejoining the chase for a Finals place.

The so-called "M1 derby" is actually, believe it or not, more often won by Gold Coast (3 wins to 2, with 2 draws to boot). This is the worst possible time for Roar to lose. If they do...I can't see Postecoglu being in a job for much longer unless their is a dramatic reversal in fortunes. Anyway. The last match did end 3-0 to Roar, but coming off the back of a 2-1 defeat to Central Coast, and with Gold Coast's 3-0 victory against Adelaide still fresh in the mind, Brisbane fans are understandably nervous. I personally can't wait for this one, it should be awesome.

That's your lot for today, I'll try and keep updates flowing on our twitter feed (look to your right). If y'all would be so kind as to follow us on the blog, on twitter and on Faceybook, that would be much appreciated, and I promise you the other guys will start posting soon. It's not just me here :)

Hasta la pasta

A-League Review: Round 11

Sorry about this being slightly late guys, I'll be doing another preview again tomorrow since there's a match on thursday. God, for such a lazy country, these Aussies dont half keep me on my toes, do they? Anyway, for once, I've actually been watching the matches (I found a live stream - WINNING!). So yeah, I can give you a decent report now :)

Brisbane Roar 1-2 Central Coast Mariners
Precition: CCM Win

What did I say? Brisbane began bright, with lots of attacking intent, but a MASSIVE blunder from Theokl...their keeper let in Mustafa Amini to score an early goal, albeit with a fairly decent finish. In fact, I'm going to link a video.

I should mention, Amini pulled his groin while celebrating this, which was pretty funny. Even after conceding this early howler, Brisbane continued pressing, but to no avail, as Ibini made the score 2-0 after a well worked move. Roar got a consolation goal through Kofi Danning.

This result means Central Coast are now top of the table by three points, and with a game in hand, and both Heart and Sydney are only 2 points behind Brisbane with a game in hand. They need to buck up their ideas, and ensure their dismal run doesn't continue next week against bottom of the table Gold Coast, though GCU did just win 3-0...it's going to be a long summer for Brisbane. Central Coast on the other hand continue their own little run and will go into the match against Perth Glory full of confidence.

Newcastle Jets 1-2 Sydney FC
Prediction: Draw, possibly Sydney win

Why is Nick Carle so highly rated? He was appauling! The commentators said he was doing fantastically, but he was just hitting tame shots at the keeper and losing the ball. I'll never understand these commentators.

Anyway, the match. Brockie scored a tremendous volley (measured at 94kph) to give a controlling Jets side a deserved 1-0 lead going into half time. However, something awoke in Sydney, and they powered back into the match, with Bruno Cazarine scoring a tap in on the hour mark, and from there, Sydney were all over the Jets. The Blues completely exploited a high defensive line with their pace, and their second goal came as no suprise as Juho Makela, the flying Finn, glanced a header in in the 84th minute to complete a fantastic Sydney comeback. This match was actually a joy to watch, and the one down side was Wheelhouse lashing out in frustration and exhaustion to pick up a red card and ruling him out of the Jets next couple of games. Jets looked tired after an hour or so, and their training schedule definitely needs to be looked at.

Sydney are now only 2 points off second-placed Brisbane Roar with a game in hand, whilst Newcastle lie in 7th place. Not really much more to say.

Perth Glory 1-2 Melbourne Heart
Prediction: Heart win

God damn I'm good with my predictions so far, that's 2.5 out of 3 (i'm counting the sydney result). Anyway, Mate Dugandzic (what a name) scored in the 87th minute to give Melbourne Heart a thrilling victory in the summer sun in Perth. Billy Mehmet (told you) and Matt Thompson both scored early goals and the match seemed to be heading for a 1-1 draw, but Heart snatched the late winner to give them their third win on the trot and hand Perth a back to back loss.

Heart's win now puts them 2 points behind Brisbane, and 5 points of the top off the top of the table, while Glory have slumped to 8th place with only 4 points separating them and bottom club Gold Coast.

Melbourne Victory 3-1 Wellington Pheonix
Prediction: Wellington win

I'd like to quote something from my previous post if you wouldn't mind.
"In case you weren't sure, that's a bigtime Wellington Pheonix win. Watch the blues prove me wrong now. "
They only went and proved me wrong -.-'

The game began brightly, with the 3 Melbourne goals coming in the first 25 minutes. Carlos Hernandez was imperious as ever, and there should have been more goals for the home side as they failed to turn their dominance into goals. Harry Kewell continued his goal drought, but he still shone. However, the game had a nasty sting in its tail for the hosts, as they had Billy Celeski sent off and Archie Thompson sidelined with an ankle injury.

For Wellington...well there wasn't really anything to say. They played their 3rd match in a week, and definitely showed it. How they managed to withstand the bombardment of shots at their goal. They will now have 5 days to get back to basics and have a bit of a rest before their home match against Newcastle Jets on the 23rd.

Victory have now leapfrogged Pheonix into 5th place with a game in hand, and hopefully this...victory...will be the spark they need to turn around their wretched recent form. Pheonix just need to hope this won't end their relatively good run, and need to pick themselves up next week.

I'm Peter Duke, and you've all been amazing. See y'all...tomorrow

Ligue 1 - 18th December 2011

I'm so out of my depth that the bottom looks like a tiny speck.

So, French football, in the ... whateverth week of Ligue 1. Things are really kicking off. Well, I would hope they are because this is football, where 'things kicking off' is literally the start of the game.

Well in a land where strikers are abundant, there were sure a lot of goals scored this week. (Did you like my pun? I thought it was good. See it's funny because the French workforce are always on strike, and striker is the footballing term for the forward-most player who kicks the round thing at the big rectangular net)

AC Ajaccio did well this week, scoring 1-0 against Rennes. You know what was great about this score? Diaware scored in the eighty-third minute. And I know it was a pretty tense match, because there were flipping loads of bookings in both the first and second half. Basically after the thirtieth minute, all pretences were down and it turned from football to footfoot.

Bordeaux (a town named because it was on the border) had a player called Sane, who (as his name suggests) kept his wits about him and scored in the twenty-second minute against Sochaux, making the final score 1-0.

Despite the final score of 0-0 between Paris SG and Lille, the game wasn't anything less than exciting. The names of all of the four people booked are hilarious. With Camara being snapped off the pitch after only nine minutes.

I love puns.

So, what happened on the 17th of December? Well, a woman's Brest won 1-0 against Auxerre. Bruno Grougi scored a penalty at the thirty fourth minute, which isn't really anything to be proud of. I mean, I know that no English person ever can score a penalty, but I personally don't think it's that hard. It's a goal waiting to be scored. Either way, I just said that so I had something to flesh out this match report with.

Nancy beat Caen 2-1, with a half-time score of 1-0, so it's pretty safe to assume that exactly the same things happened in both halves. And what do you know! Bookings for Caen: one in the ninth minute, and then one in the fifty-eighth minute. Okay, due to the other team having five bookings, we can't really say that the exact same thing happened in both halves there... but two in the first half and three in the second half helps bring my point home. Also, I don't know what a Karaboue is, but Loosemy wants you to let go of it. For clarification of that joke, Loosemy Karaboue scored in the third minute.

Who knew football could be so hilarious?

St Etienne beat Dijon 2-1 in almost exactly the same way as previously reported. Yup, 1-0 at half time blah blah. There were four bookings, but they all happened in the second half. And Dijon received three of those bookings. They were pretty well spaced out actually, occurring at 63, 76 and 84 minutes respectively. It's almost like they planned it... In fact, St Etienne's booking happened at 55 minutes. Huh... Odd.

So let's spice things up a little with the best team name ever, which is Evian Thonon Gaillar. Unfortunately they lost 2-1 against Lyon. "You're meant to be unbias" you say? With a name like Evian Thonon Gaillar, I think I have the right to be bias. In any case, it also turned out to be a pretty interesting match. The second half really heated up after the score of 1-1, with three booking happening all at the same time-ish and in the last six minutes, a player from each team was even sent off. Defecate the bed.

Ooh, this match looks even more interesting. Marseille beat Lorient 2-1, and it's not even like Marseille were playing a hard game. With three bookings and two players sent off, Lorient were really playing dirty. And for a while it looks like it would pay off. They scored in the 77th minute, but then Marseille clawed back in the last ten minutes, and Valbuena and Cheyrou both scored (Cheyrou five minutes into extra time). I can hear you salivating at how juicy that game sounded.

My my, the French do play rough. With a grand total of seven bookings and one sent off, the game between Montpellier and Toulouse was a toughie. Dernis scored for Montpellier in the 7th minute, and M'Bengue scored for Toulouse just before half time. Then the spats began after half time, which didn't really help either team because the final score was 1-1.

The final (or first, I may have done this in reverse chronological order, but if I have it's not my fault because it's my first time) is the game between Nice and Valenciennes. Nice. No, I didn't just randomly say the name of one of the teams, I was just commenting on how awesome the names of the teams are. I'm pretty sure the atmosphere of this game was tense. Valenciennes got a booking in the twenty-second minute when Kadir presumably did something wrong. There is something odd about this game though. After Mouloungi or Nice got booked, Bong of Valenciennes responded by also getting booked, but then they just backed off, allowing Mounier of Nice to score in the sixty-eighth and ninety-third minute, leaving the final score at 2-0.

Well this has been an exciting week of football in the laziest country since Madagascar, hasn't it? I say Madagascar is lazy, purely because it hasn't got any people in it, and therefore no industry, and therefore no work. It is a separate world, that cares about no one but itself. Kind of like France, come to think of it.

I'm Peter Hutchinson, and I heavily stereotype the French.

Pete out.

A-League Preview: 17th December 2011

Here we are, our first A-League preview. Deep breath, here we go.

(ALREADY CONFIRMED) Adelaide United 0-3 Gold Coast United

In one of the shocks of the season so far, Gold Coast banished their horrendous form of late to shine through and score 3 sublime goals. In what is only their second win of the season, Ben Halloran opened the scoring with a poachers finish after an error from the Reds' defence. Rigters then scored a screamer from 20 yards to effectively seal the points, and with no sign of an Adelaide comeback, Gold Coast forward Dylan Macallister piled on the misery for the home support in typical style with a deft finish inside injury time.

The result leaves GCU still at the bottom, but within reach of 8th placed Melbourne Victory, and such a thrashing will do no harm to their morale, with team spirit reportedly lacking at Skilled Park. Meanwhile, Adelaide coach Rini Coolen is no doubt feeling the pressure, with so much promise being shown by the Adelaide team during pre-season, but nothing coming from it, and they will be looking to bounce back against Sydney next week.

Dukey's One 2 Watch: Brisbane Roar - Central Coast Mariners

Date: Saturday, 17 December, 2011
Kick-off: 6.45pm (Queensland time)
Venue: Suncorp Stadium

This one is a biggy. Brisbane and Central Coast both find themselves level on points at the top of the A-League table, knowing that a victory would not only give them the lead, but also a bit of breathing room over their opponents and would leave CCM 3 points ahead with a game in hand over their bitter rivals. Overall, history is kinder to Brisbane, with the Roar winning 14, drawing 12 and losing 12 of their previous matches with Central Coast, with whom they last played out a thrilling 1-0 win back in October. With their impeccable loss-less streak over, and with the loss to Wellington still bringing tears to the eyes of many fans, they will no doubt be looking to reassert their dominance at the top of the table. While the Mariners have no major injury worries, Brisbane's forward 3 - Matt Smith, Henrique and Thomas Broich are all out with injuries, though after sitting out Wednesday's loss to Wellington, Smith is hoping to feature. This could be key to CCM pulling off a victory at Suncorp stadium.

Looking at the form table:
Brisbane Roar: WWLLL
Central Coast: DWWWW
We can see that it is not a good time to be playing Central Coast, while the total opposite can be said of 'Roarcelona'. And for those of you who can remember the intense 2011 Grand Final, you know that this is going to be a cracker. My prediction? Central Coast Win.

Newcastle Jets - Sydney FC

Date: Saturday, December 17
Kick-off: 5.30pm AEDT
Venue: Ausgrid Stadium

A mid-table affair, both sides will be looking for the win that could elevate them to 3rd in the table (should other results go their way of course). Unluckily for Jets fans, out of 20 games, Sydney have won 11, with Newcastle only winning 3. However, a quick look at the form table:

Newcastle: LLDWL
Sydney FC: WLLWD

...is inconclusive. Both teams have had similar luck over the past few games, however, it is fair to say that have played (and beaten) Brisbane, and played Central Coast aswell, Sydney have had a harder time of it than Newcastle, though they could only muster a draw against bottom-of-the-table Gold Coast. The last match between these two teams ended in a 1-1 draw, and with neither team having any particular injury worries, I can't see this match being anything other than a draw, but perhaps a Sydney win. I just can't see Newcastle edging this one. Draw

Perth Glory - Melbourne Heart

Date: Saturday, 17 December 2011
Kick-off: 7:00pm AWST, 10:00pm (AEDT),
Venue: nib Stadium

With Heart only being a couple of years old, we can't really look back to see how this might end - the record stands at Perth W1, D3, Hearts W0. However, we can check the form tables to give us an idea.

Perth Glory: LDLWL
Melbourne Heart: WWLWW

Heart. Though they lost this match in October, 2-1, a total reversal of fortune has occured, and they now find themselves in 3rd going into the match knowing a victory would see them two points behind Roar (since they have already played an extra game...rather screwed up a direct league comparison there). Oh, did I mention? They were also recently the first team since January 2010 to take points of Brisbane at Suncorp stadium. Yeah, I know. After a string of solid performances, all eyes will be on Eli Babalj, the Heart 19-year old striker being at the...heart of Heart's scintillating form. For readers from the UK wanting something to support here, there happens to be an Irishman playing - a fairly influential one at that aswell, Billy Mehmet for Perth. I'm going to go with a Melbourne Heart victory.

Melbourne Victory - Wellington Pheonix

Date: Sunday December 18
Kick-off: 5:00pm AEDT, 7.00pm NZDT
Venue: AAMI Park, Melbourne

My, oh my. What has happened to Victory recently? Just a couple of years ago they seemed like becoming the dominant force in Aussie football. Now they're languishing in 8th place in the table, while Pheonix are up in the heady heights of 4th place.

Melbourne: DDWLD
Wellington Phoenix: DWLWW

There's the problem, in black and white. See those D's? They should be W's. Melbourne just haven't been scoring enough. I've been sat here for a while trying to pick through why exactly this is happening, but I can't even blame injury. Perhaps it's just the England effect. For those of you who aren't familiar with this - we Englishmen are painfully aware of the devastation it can bring to a team - the team had such expectation on them from the beginning of the season, and nerves got to them. But enough about them. Wellington are a team high on confidence, having secured their first back to back wins for a year and a half. I would definitely expect to see them make light of their fairly dismal record against the Victory at AAMI Park on sunday (the record which, by the way stands at 5 Melbourne wins to 2 Wellington wins, with their most recently match being a 2-1 Melbourne win).

In case you weren't sure, that's a bigtime Wellington Pheonix win. Watch the blues prove me wrong now.

Peter Hutchinson: Some say that he's never even heard of the word "football" and yet here he is updating you on the lazily-named Ligue 1 for France. How he'll do it and effectively comment on it is completely beyond most people, but he shall do it with compassion.

David Finn: The football of the Spaniards is where David's heart lies (probably) and he will definitely be on the 18-yard line of the internet giving you the updates.

Manny Gomez: It's Deutschland ueber Alles for Manny, as he dives deep and dark into the exciting world of the Bundesliga with some proper good footballing gut-ness.

Harry Simpson: This boy is literally and completely fixated on the throbbing abs of Italian men. Not because he's a homosexual, no, because he doesn't let a single minute of Italian football escape from him.

Josh Hilton: It's not Dutch ovens for Josh, it's Dutch football. You know what makes the Netherlands great for football? It's flat.

So, that's us. Be prepared to be kicked in the balls. Footballs.
